Carbon Footprint

« Back to Glossary Index

What is Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is the calculation of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent, measured in tons, as a result of human activities. The carbon footprint can be calculated for individuals, corporations, regions, organizations, etc.

There are two main components of the carbon footprint:

Direct Footprint

These are greenhouse gas emissions resulting from activities such as residential energy consumption, transportation, cooking, heating, and cooling.

Indirect Footprint

These are greenhouse gas emissions resulting from activities such as the production, supply, and disposal of goods and services.

The carbon footprint is a crucial indicator of global warming. The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere leads to planetary warming and climate change.

Various measures can be taken at both individual and corporate levels to reduce the carbon footprint. These measures include initiatives such as energy efficiency projects, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and adopting sustainable consumption habits.

Ways to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Some measures that can be taken at the individual level to reduce the carbon footprint include:

Energy efficiency projects: Reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency initiatives in offices and ships. Examples include low-emission fuels, design changes, and machinery limitations.

Investment in renewable energy sources: By investing in renewable energy sources, you can reduce the environmental impact of your corporate activities.

Establishing sustainable supply chains: Requesting suppliers to adopt sustainable production practices can help reduce the environmental impact of your corporate activities.

Reducing the carbon footprint is a significant step in combating global warming and climate change.
